"Participation as a role model gives me a new appreciation for my
co-workers and a reality check on the importance of my job and the confidence I’ve achieved by being in such a field.”

WRDC Mentor

The purpose of a mentor is to provide a social community and network among women to assist in successfully reaching their goals, such as performing well academically or making friends. Mentoring is a powerful and mutually beneficial way to address the feeling of isolation and lack of support among women in trades and technology. It is a way for women to share what are often ground-breaking experiences and help breakdown perceived gender barriers.

Mentors can expect to realize improvement in the following:

  • Self esteem and confidence
  • Leadership Skills
  • Academic and professional planning
  • Interpersonal communicative skills
  • Professional and Career Development

WHAT IS A MENTOR?

A mentor is there to share, teach, guide, advise, listen, support, provide a role model, validate, motivate, protect and communicate.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MENTORING?

Mentors help develop a support system. They can help you learn how to navigate the academic system, find resources on campus, and get inside knowledge on the different perspectives and technical aspects of their program as well as help you gain access to the workforce upon graduation. In general students who participate in mentor programs are more academically successful.
