APPLICATION

HOST SCHOOL IDENTIFIED

In the early planning stages, many meetings are scheduled with school board representatives, high school principals, and other designated school officials in order to determine whether there is support for the program and identify which schools wish to host a Techsploration team. One essential criteria is that interested schools must identify a teacher who will volunteer to take an active role on the team. Schools identified for Techsploration will represent the diversity of communities across the Eastern School District.

ROLE MODELS IDENTIFIED

Employers are contacted and asked to suggest names of female role models working in trades or technology occupations in their organizations for the teams. It is important to seek out role models from diverse cultural backgrounds. A briefing session is then scheduled with role models who are interested in participating. Role models can include women in feilds such as Marine Safety Specialist, Avionics Engineer, Structural Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, a Geologist, and Environmental Engineer and many more.

TEACHERS BRIEFED

Upon confirmation that their school has been selected to host the program, teachers are invited to attend a briefing session. Background information is provided, and gender issues related to trades and technology careers are discussed.

PARTICIPANTS SELECTED

Girls are invited to apply to participate on a team. This may take the form of a short essay where they state why they want to be considered. The team teacher with other volunteers will select six applicants, aiming for a team that is diverse and includes participants at different levels of academic achievement, whether they are registered as students in school or not .

THE TEAM

Each host school has a team, made up of a teacher, a role model, and six participants. They are assigned a specific career to research.
